Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position:Īpplicants must demonstrate creative ability in graphic illustration and design be familiar with newspaper and layout design principles be able to work on deadline (Saturday & Sunday) and work cooperatively with others and be proficient with Adobe's InDesign, with working knowledge of other Adobe Creative Suite programs, such as Photoshop and Illustrator.

This position reports with occasional supervision to the executive editor. Be receptive to appropriate feedback regarding work for the newspaper as well as other duties as assigned. Work cooperatively with all editors, advertising representatives and other staff members, and work with editors to maintain a consistent look and quality to the newspaper's sections. Meet assigned deadlines and attend all meetings and training that pertain to layout. Work with graphic designer to ensure proper print quality of graphics and ads. Work with advertising staff to insert and correctly size advertisements for each issue. Develop creative graphics and visual elements for stories based on assignments and initiative. Must be able to work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for print production, and will be asked to make website edits as needed. The Layout Editor will develop and publish web pages and interactive multimedia for the online edition of The Northern Light. Layout Editor must combine stories, graphics, photos and other visual elements into a tabloid-size layout for printing. In addition to print circulation, The Northern Light publishes new web content weekly on their website:. Total distribution is 2,000 copies weekly during the spring and fall semesters and 2,500 copies monthly during the summer semester. The Northern Light is distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. The paper is published Tuesdays during the school year and bi-weekly during the summer.
